THE CHEK PROGRAM
The CHEK Program at JSC consists of Corrective Exercise and Nutrition & Lifestyle Coaching. Basically, it is a total health consulting program.
Corrective exercise is a modality concerned with improving the balance of one’s posture. Good posture is more than just standing up tall. It is the ability to maintain optimal body alignment when the body is at rest, or idle, (static posture) and when moving (dynamic posture). It is when there is poor alignment that excessive and prolonged wear and tear of the body’s joints occur. I see this all the time in chronic knee pain patients, especially of the patellofemoral variety where the cartilage of the kneecap is worn away causing increased bone-to-bone contact creating pain. Most of these patients have some kind of stiffness/weakness of the foot/ankle or hip/trunk. The knee becomes the hardest worker in the body in order to take up the slack of another body part. It becomes a compensatory movement strategy. For example, during the squatting movement, if there were limitations in movement at the ankle, hip, and lumbar spine, the knees would be the only way to squat down towards the floor.
Corrective exercise is geared towards addressing one’s alignment by stretching/mobilizing what is tight/stiff and strengthening/stabilizing what is weak/unstable and integrating the improved alignment into functional movement patterns. Corrective exercise is not just about muscle and joints. It is also about training your nervous system by installing new software, or motor programs, so that you can move more efficiently and effectively.
JSC provides corrective and high-performance conditioning programs. One-on-one personal training is also available, but on a limited basis. The Corrective Exercise Program is formulated to give the client everything he/she will need to implement a program on their own. “Everything” is defined as an individualized corrective exercise program with specific acute exercise program variables (ie. reps, sets, tempo, intensity, rest periods, etc.) along with appropriate periodization schemes. We do all the thinking; you do all the physical work. You get the results.
The CHEK Program consists of a Comprehensive Evaluation, Program Design, Program Instruction, and a Nutrition & Lifestyle Consultation.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Comprehensive Evaluation – generally lasts about two to five hours and is usually divided into two sessions. Please arrive well-nourished, well-hydrated, and rested. Female attire will be training bras and bike shorts or similar and male attire is bike shorts or any short-cut type of shorts (nothing baggy like surfer’s shorts). This attire will allow for better visualization for postural assessments. Although this is an evaluation, it may feel like a workout for many. Be ready to work.
Program Design – One to two hours. You will not be present for this. A highly individualized program will be developed based upon your Evaluation.
Program Instruction – generally up to three one hour sessions. Also, recommendations for specific exercise equipment, as well as modifications for individual exercise environment (ie. gym, home, etc.) will be made. Follow-up sessions are made every 4-6 weeks in order to update your program.
Nutrition & Lifestyle Consultation - generally about an hour which will include an initial Nutrition Response Testing (NRT) assessment as well as laying the groundwork for your wellness program. Follow-ups for the NRT are required and follow-ups for coaching are on an as needed basis.
