Forty-Six Reasons Why Your Body Needs Water
The following was taken from the excellent book, Water for health, for healing, for life: Yo're not sick, You're thirsty, by F. Batmanghelidj, MD.
1. Without water, nothing lives.
2. Comparative shortage of water first suppresses and eventually kills some aspects of the body.
3. Water is the main source of energy – it is the “cash flow” of the body.
4. Water generates electrical and magnetic energy inside each and every cell of the body – it provides the power to live.
5. Water is the bonding adhesive in the architectural design of the cell structure.
6. Water prevents DNA damage and makes its repair mechanisms more efficient – less abnormal DNA is made.
7. Water increases greatly the efficiency of the immune system in the bone marrow, where the immune system is formed (all its mechanisms) – including its efficiency against cancer.
8. Water is the main solvent for all foods, vitamins, and minerals. It is used in the breakdown of food into smaller particles and their eventual metabolism and assimilation.
9. Water energizes food, and food particles are then able to supply the body with this energy during digestion. This is why food without water has absolutely no energy value for the body.
10. Water increases the body’s rate of absorption of essential substances in food.
11. Water is used to transport all substances inside the body.
12. Water increases the efficiency of red blood cells in collecting oxygen in the lungs.
13. When water reaches a cell, it brings the cell oxygen and takes the waste gases to the lungs for disposal.
14. Water clears toxic waste from different parts of the body and takes it to the liver and kidneys for disposal.
15. Water is the main lubricant in the joint spaces and helps prevents arthritis and back pain.
16. Water is used in the spinal discs to make them “shock-absorbing water cushions.”
17. Water is the best lubricating laxative and prevents constipation.
18. Water helps reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
19. Water prevents clogging of arteries in the heart and the brain.
20. Water is essential for the body’s cooling (sweat) and heating (electrical) systems.
21. Water gives us power and electrical energy for all brain functions, most particularly thinking.
22. Water is directly needed for the efficient manufacture of all neurotransmitters, including serotonin.
23. Water is directly needed for the production of all hormones made by the brain, including melatonin.
24. Water can help prevent attention deficit disorder in children and adults.
25. Water increases efficiency at work; expands your attention span.
26. Water is a better pick-me-up than any other beverage in the world – and it has no side effects.
27. Water helps reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.
28. Water restores normal sleep rhythms.
29. Water helps reduce fatigue – it gives us the energy of youth.
30. Water makes the skin smoother and helps decrease the effects of aging.
31. Water gives luster and shine to the eyes.
32. Water helps prevent glaucoma.
33. Water normalizes the blood-manufacturing systems in the bone marrow – it helps prevent leukemia and lymphoma.
34. Water is absolutely vital for making the immune system more efficient in different regions to fight infections and cancer cells where they are formed.
35. Water dilutes the blood and prevents it from clotting during circulation.
36. Water decreases premenstrural pains and hot flashes.
37. Water and heartbeats create the dilution and waves that keep things from sedimenting in the bloodstream.
38. The human body has no stored water to draw on during dehydration. This is why you must drink regularly and throughout the day.
39. Dehydration prevents sex hormone production – one of the primary causes of impotence and loss of libido.
40. Drinking water separates the sensations of thirst and hunger.
41. To lose weight, water is the best way to go – drink water on time and lose weight without much dieting. Also, you will not eat excessively when you feel hungry but are in fact only thirsty for water.
42. Dehydration causes deposits of toxic sediments in the tissue spaces, joints, kidneys, liver, brain, and skin. Water will clear these deposits.
43. Water reduces the incidence of morning sickness in pregnancy.
44. Water integrates mind and body functions. It increases ability to realize goals and purpose.
45. Water helps prevent the loss of memory as we age. It helps reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and Lou Gehrig’s disease.
46. Water helps reverse addictive urges, including those for caffeine, alcohol, and some drugs.

This list is not saying that water is the miracle cure of all diseases. The only thing water cures is dehydration. Dehydration may be an underlying cause of many chronic conditions such as allergies, asthma, hypertension, Type II Diabetes, and chronic pain (to name a few). Do not be confused with what is called clinical dehydration from what some are now calling sub-clinical dehydration. Clinical dehydration is a more severe state that is often seen in acute traumatic or pathologic conditions. The sub-clinical form is usually not recognized by most medical professionals because it is not life threatening and not as obvious. As I’ve mentioned in previous articles, the body has the amazing ability of resiliency and compensation. Since our bodies do not have a specific reservoir to store water, when there is a “drought”, certain mechanisms are activated where the existing water in the body is rationed to areas of higher priority. This means that there are cells that will be deprived of water which will lead to a slow, degenerative process causing damage which will eventually affect bodily systems.

Unfortunately, many people feel that they drink adequate amounts of water when in reality they are not. There is no exact science on determining how much is enough. Generally, if your urine is consistently clear, you are sufficiently hydrated. I have been following Dr. Batmanghelidj’s recommendation of drinking at least half your body weight in ounces with my patients and clients with great results. This is a general guideline and is modified individually. For example, the more active, stressed out, constipated, or unhealthy an individual is, or the more caffeine and alcohol one consumes, the more water recommended. This is assuming they have normal kidney function. The biggest complaint initially is the inconvenience of having to go to the bathroom frequently throughout the day. This is normal and very common, but usually subsides as intracellular and extracellular fluid levels balance out.

What kind of water do I drink?

I do not recommend drinking tap water. Many would disagree with me and say that it is safe and it won’t kill you. My question is, “Why does the water get so cloudy after it comes out of the faucet and then suddenly becomes clear again”? I am not a scientist, but that “cloudy-to-clear” reaction seems evident of some kind of pollutants in the water. Filters such as Pur or even cheaper, Brita, are an alternative. I also do not recommend them for two reasons: 1) Most people do not change the filters as regularly as needed, and 2) I feel the filters do not filter out all of the contaminants (I have no specific evidence of this other than personal experience. Try tasting filtered water and bottled spring water – I can actually taste a difference, where the spring water has a crisper, clean flavor). Bottled water appears to be your best choice, but be aware not all bottled water are alike. Some brands like Dasani and Aquafina are basically filtered municipal tap water. Higher-end brands are Vittel (my favorite), Evian, Trinity, Fiji, and Volvic. If possible, try to drink these brands due to their higher Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). A higher TDS means that there are more trace elements in the water. I like to say that they have more life in them. If you’re not rich, then the next best choice is spring water. By law, if the bottle says “spring water”, the water must have come from a natural spring water source. The most affordable brand is Poland Springs. Poland Springs is also one of the few brands that will deliver 5 gallon bottles to residential areas. My family has about 55 gallons (11 bottles) delivered every 3 weeks and we use it for not just drinking but for cooking as well.

Some suggestions for better health:
  • Drink at least ½ your body weight in ounces per day.
  • Make water available to you throughout the day. Get into a habit to always have a bottle within your reach. Try not to “guzzle” too much water at one time. Take a few sips at a time.
  • Invest in a bottle with measurements to know exactly how much water you are drinking. Brands such as Nalgene have quart size bottles.
  • Try drinking about a quart of water as soon as you wake up in the morning. This literally flushes your system out and rehydrates you after a night of relative dehydration. It is also great for relieving constipation.
  • Try to drink most of your water earlier in the day to avoid having to wake up in the middle of the night.
  • Drink some water about 15-30 minutes before and 1-2 hours after a meal. This is to assist and not impede digestion.
  • Avoid caffeinated beverages such as coffee and sodas as well as excessive alcohol. They tend to have dehydrating effects (as well as other health-disruptive properties)
  • Drink room temperature water. Cold water has a tendency to remain in our stomachs until it reaches body temperature. This is not a necessity, but allows for faster utilization of the water for your cells to use.
  • The next time you think you feel hungry, try drinking a glass or two of water instead and see if the hunger feeling disappears. Our thirst and hunger sensations often get mixed up and some people tend to eat when they were really just thirsty.
  • Stay away from so called “energizing” drinks such as Red Bull or “sports” drinks like Gatorade. These drinks are highly processed and stressful to your body. I can write a whole article about the harmful effects alone.
